Solo Recital

In this program Peter combines a masterpiece of J.S. Bach, his 3rd partita for violin solo, with the 2nd solosonate of Eugene Ysaye, a piece that refers heavily to Bach’s partita. In between are the 2 pieces for violin solo Alfred Schnittke composed during his lifetime, an early fugue from 1953 and his caprice ‘A Paganini’, forming a commentary on Paganini’s 24 caprices. The final element of this 70’ long recital is a set of ‘variations’ I have written around the Bach movements, very much like the ‘doubles’ Bach composed to the various dance movements in his first partita for solo violin.

In total this set forms a sort of ‘super’ solo sonata with a fugue (like in the Bach solo sonatas) and a rich interchange of movements and moods in different characters full of references towards each other.
